i think I'll call it...

..."Faux Wool". I'm sure I'm not the first to come up with this technique, but I sure couldn't find anything out there when I search the internet. After watching some of Fran's Painting with Embossing Powder videos, I was playing with embossing powders and started wondering what would happen if I used that dry wall mesh still sitting on my desk. You know the same one from a few posts back that I never put away (whistling..cleaning the desk later!) Here's what I came up with...

  1. To create the bottom embossed section of the card, I cut a 2x3 piece of cardstock. It doesn't really matter what color your cardstock is because you're going to be covering it completely.
  2. Ink the entire piece of cardstock up with Versamark. Be sure to get a good coat of ink on the cardstock.
  3. Next cut a piece of dry wall mesh (or Magic Mesh) to fit the cardstock. Gently adhere it down on top of the inked cardstock.
  4. Take your cardstock and cover the entire piece with white Embossing Powder. Be sure to tap off the extra.
  5. Carefully peel off your dry wall mesh. You'll find that the mesh has acted as a stencil and left a grid pattern.
  6. Sprinkle brown embossing powder over the entire piece of cardstock. Tap off the extra. Don't worry about the white embossing powder already on your piece because that is stuck down to the ink.
  7. Now the magic begins. Heat your piece and watch as the powders melt and blend just slightly into each other. You can see in my sample that I had some extra grains of brown embossing powder amongst the white...just adds to the effect. Doesn't it kinda look like wool?

Very cool, Wendy! Makes me wish that I still had some Magic Mesh around here. May need to take a trip to Lowe's. Kind of similar to that technique done with glitter and lace.
